Earlier this week officials in China announced a lift on the 14-year ban on gaming consoles. The last console legally sold in China was the original Playstation. If Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo or any other foreign company wishes to sell consoles in China they would have to be manufactured in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and after that would need to be inspected by various cultural authorities.
There’s no telling what impact this could have on the big three or newer consoles like the Ouya and Steam Machines. Chinese gamers have grown accustomed to PC and mobile platforms, and “freemium” games. Time will only tell what impact this will have on the gaming industry.
