It turns out that your paranoid mother was right. Even over a secure connection online (e.g. https://…), our passwords and personal information have been vulnerable to hackers for at least two years. Well known sites all over the web have admitted that they have potentially been effected by this bug, which is being referred to as “Heartbleed.” As a matter of fact, it is estimated that as many of 81% of all websites run on servers that are vulnerable to the bug. Big players like Yahoo and Amazon have already released patches to address the issue, but many other sites have yet to make fixes.
